This is a a major oil and gas company-specific term used in Integrity Management and broadly follows the intent of the concept of a "safety critical element" which has a very specific definition within UK Safety Case legislation. In both cases the intent is to identify those bits of plant and equipment concerned with the management of major hazards. Attention can then be focussed on ensuring appropriate maintenance and other assurance activities are carried out.
