RITT (Riser Insertion Tube Tool) is a device to collect hydrocarbons from the broken end of the riser at the sea floor. The process is referred to as "spearing" the riser. The 4" diameter steel pipe with disc-like rubber baffles is inserted into the 21" diameter damaged riser. The baffles are intended to inhibit the flow from the riser and assist hydrocarbons into the steel insertion tube for collection. To prevent ice-like crystals called gas hydrates from forming inside the riser, methanol is injected down the RITT through an injection line.
