Hazardous Materials Identification System

A color-coded, numeric-based hazard labeling system developed by the National Paint & Coatings Association (NPCA) in the US to convey full health/safety information under NON-EMERGENCY conditions (i.e., normal use conditions). HMIS labels are NOT related to NFPA 704 labels although the two labeling systems utilize a similar approach Both have three colored sections, blue/red/yellow. HOWEVER, HMIS features color-coded horizontal bars, while the NFPA symbol is a color-coded diamond. Also, NFPA is intended to communicate information to fire fighters and represent fire or other emergency conditions. <p> HMIS labels are not related to WHMIS, which is a Canadian regulatory-based hazard identification system. <p> HMIS labels are not related to a U.S. DOT information management system also called HMIS.
