High Integrity Protection System

A means of protecting pipework and process vessels from damage from over pressure by a system of pressure-detecting sensors linked to relief and shutdown systems, incorporating a high degree of redundancy and voting to ensure very high reliability and rapid response.<p> <p> This is just a special case of HIPPS. It's not just pressure which can be controlled although that the most common one. The technique can apply to any process variable e.g. over or under temperature, low flow, etc
