EMERGENCY SHUT DOWN SYSTEMS
The Emergency Shutdown (ESD) System on the installation shall, so far as reasonably practical: - automatically sense abnormal process operational and equipment conditions; alert the operator in the Central Control Room, and at the driller’s panels; inform drilling to make safe; provide executive actions which reduce the consequences of the incident or hazard, including the isolation of flammable inventories, depressurisation of the process, tripping non essential equipment and maintaining well barriers; in the event of a release of hydrocarbons to the atmosphere, reduce the probability of ignition by isolation of ignition sources; return the process to a safe and stable condition.
